Growing up, the holidays never really went well. I actually can only remember bits and pieces of a few holidays because my brain has literally blocked out the rest of them. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there were some good holidays but from what I do remember, in my family they usually went something along the lines of waking up to my mom drunk (unless she was in rehab at the time), lots of screaming, the cops showing up at least once, and wasting a lot of food because we never actually got around to cooking or eating the meal that was planned.
Even though I’ve come to not expect much on the holiday’s I can still get down, especially when I spend them alone. But here’s the thing… there’s really no reason to be down. It’s just another day.
I know everyone makes it out to seem like some big deal where you HAVE to be surrounded by family and loved ones on holidays or there is something seriously wrong with you but let me tell you something, friend. There’s nothing wrong with you and there’s nothing wrong with me. We just got dealt shitty cards in the family and friends department so let’s just call it what it is. The holiday’s are JUST. ANOTHER. DAY. So who care’s if you’re spending it alone?!
My boyfriend is going to be working on Christmas and New Years and pretty much all the other holidays coming up next year. He manages a transportation company and usually has to pick up the slack around the holidays so I’ve gotten used to spending the holidays alone and these 8 things below are exactly how I like to spend my days!
8 Things To Do When Spending Holidays Alone
1. Skip the Pity Party
I’m usually all for pity parties. I mean, I’m depressed AF. Pity parties are like my bread and butter but not today. Not on holidays. There is no reason to have a pity party just because you’re alone on the holidays.
While everyone else is out having dinner with family… AKA grinning and bearing it while relatives they haven’t seen the last holiday sideways criticize their weight and bank accounts, you have an entire day to yourself.
Might I add, an entire day where most major businesses are closed. Instead of having a pity party, I choose to look at it as that pause button on life I’ve been praying for. And just keep reminding yourself… It’s just another day.
2. Stay In Your PJ’s All Day (and be totally okay with it!)
So I have this rule that after my first cup of coffee in the morning I have to get out of my PJ’s and get dressed (unless I wake up having a really really bad day). Because if not, I’ll stay in my PJ’s till like next Christmas without even blinking an eye. However… on holidays as a little present to myself, I like to stay in my PJ’s all day long! Why not?! Stores are closed, banks are closed… pretty much everywhere is closed so treat yourself to a pajama day and be totally okay with it!
3. Have a Self Care Day
This is the PERFECT time to have a self care day! Check out my Ultimate At Home Self Care Guide!
Since basically everything is closed, this is kind of the perfect time to de-clutter. Grab a
glass bottle of wine, turn up the tunes, and throw some shit out! Or ya know… sip some tea and make responsible piles of things to maybe get rid of… whatever works for you! But this is definitely the perfect time to de-clutter, get rid of some negative energy that may be hanging around your home, and prepare to start the year off on the right foot. WTFever that means!
5. Stuff Your Face Forgivingly
Because YOLO. I’m usually all about watching what I eat but on these kinds of days, I just enjoy myself. Heck, I’m eating a mini pumpkin pie by myself as I write this blog post!
6. Start Reading That Book From Last Years News Years Resolution That You Never Got Around To Reading

Since everything is closed and you’ve got the day to yourself, why not spend some time trying to meditate and manifest good vibes for next year?
